Tuesday, in a crucial Ambassador League baseball game, that’s exactly what happened to Arrowhead Christian Academy as they hosted Aquinas on a blustery but warm afternoon.
Three Eagles pitchers combined to walk 12 batters and hit two others. Aquinas right fielder Mason Greenhouse cashed in for Aquinas, hitting a pair of home runs and driving in five runs in 11-6 victory that kept the Falcons undefeated in league play.
Starting pitchers Chris Alzaga (Aquinas) and Bobby Mahoney (Arrowhead Christian) stranded four baserunners over the first two innings.
Then the offensive floodgates opened.
Esteban Olazaba got the scoring started for Aquinas (19-2 overall, 6-0 in league) with a sacrifice fly in the third inning. Greenhouse followed with an opposite-field, two-run homer to right field to extend the lead.
“When we got here today, I saw that the wind was blowing from left to right and knew if I could just get a barrel on something either up the middle or opposite field it’d carry.” Greenhouse said.
Arrowhead Christian (13-10, 6-2) answered in the fourth, as Jameson Pierce hit his first homer of the season, a three-run shot that tied the game.
Greenhouse hit his second homer of the day and fourth of the season with one out in the fifth inning. It was a three-run blast that helped Aquinas regain the lead.
“Big players step up in big spots, and that’s exactly what Mason did this afternoon at the plate,” Falcons coach Mike Carpentier said.
Four straight Falcon hitters reached against Mahoney in that inning, and Arrowhead Christian coach Clint Toth made a change. Elijah Humphries walked the first two batters he face but got out of the inning without further damage.
“You just can’t give away that many free bases and expect to get by a team like Aquinas with such great hitters,” Toth said.
Alzaga struck out the leadoff man in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, he walked back-to-back batters which set the stage for Diesel Toth’s homer that tied the score at 6. Carpentier lifted Alzaga after the home run, and Gavin Egan got a double-play to end the inning.
An inning later, Arrowhead Christian had runners on first and second, but Eagan got a flyout to quash the rally.
Moses Trejo, Pierce, and Diesel Toth all had multiple hits for Arrowhead Christian in the loss.
Humphries and Daniel Rivera combined to walk the first three Aquinas batters to start the seventh inning. Aquinas went back on top after a sacrifice fly by Damien Casas, and the Falcons added four more runs to pull away. Cole McGregor singled home a run, and Chase Hadnot doubled home another.
Egan was able to make a five-run lead stick, throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings and allowing just three hits to pick up the win.
“We’ve certainly been battle tested and know we’ve got a little bit of a marathon to finish out the regular season but these guys are ready for that challenge to finish out league play and head into the playoffs,” Carpentier said.
The series between the two teams finishes Thursday afternoon at Aquinas.
